We fear that the State Government plans up to 16,000 new dwellings and 32,000 new residents without the necessary Active Open Space. Adding up to 32,000 new people on top of the existing 57,000 in the Leichhardt Municipality and 38,000 in City of Sydney's Pyrmont-Ultimo and Glebe precincts mean there will be a crisis in recreational Active open space. And this is before other major Inner West projects like New Parramatta Road - and the dozens of other large scale housing developments already underway.
There will be no new Spaces to Play for the growing number of children and adults looking for sporting activities for fitness and well-being. You cannot have a fit and healthy community without sporting facilities - something that has been forgotten and actively overlooked by property developers in every new medium or high density dwelling project. There are compelling economic arguments for sporting facilities to ensure a fit and health community.
And all those new residents will be turned away because of a lack of fields and facilities, missing out on the chance to join sporting clubs to make new friendships in their local community.
There is already a significant shortage of sporting fields, and places for sports like netball and basketball, in the inner-west right now. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity in Bays Precinct to create Spaces to Play, a minimum of fields based on whatever the eventually proposed resident number is. But the past 30 years shows it will not happen unless everyone becomes part of the team to make it happen. Children and adults need Spaces to Play. We need you all to join our campaign, Our Facebook page is updated regularly, so go to it for updates. https://www.facebook.com/spacestoplaybays?ref=hl
